Ovechkin started the scoring early on a powerplay setup that had him fire a mean wrister close to the net and hit the back of that net(assists Jurcina and Laich). 1-0 Caps. Then the Caps got another powerplay and they scored on that one too. Thos time Kozlov redirected a shot from the point and fpound the back of the net (assited by Helmer and Lepisto to Hershey call-ups). The Islanders would strike twice in a row to tie things at 2-2 heading into a 3rd period that was all Caps. Alzner struck a point shot off the shin of a defender which caromed off the boards to the goalie who tried to hold out but it squirted through the crease where Donald Brashear worker hard to slide it into the ent with a defender draped on his back (assisted by ALzner(first career point) and Jurcina. Then Eric Fehr scored on yet another powerplay this time backhanding a juicy rebound niclet pass Mcdonald who made 42 of 46 saves and let's just say he was tested and tested often in this one. (assisted by Laich and Ovechkin). Then the goalie was pulled with 1:44 remaining and the Caps created a turnover and away came Ovechkin streaking to net an empty netter but with a Dman in his way he slid the puck over to Nik Backstrom who broke out with him and Backstrom hit the open net easily. First star award was Kozlov(goal) who also hit the post in this one second star Karl ALzner (assist) and third star was Brashear who netted the game winner. Ovechkin should have been a star with a goal and two helpers but I guess he's a start so often that some of the other players were given star awards. Brent Johnson made 27 of 29 saves and allowed just 2 goals which is a great performance also star waorthy so you could say five Caps should have been stars maybe even six with Fehr scoring that terrific backhander. washoington was 60% on the PP 3-5 and remain in first 5 points over next closest Carolina who lost tonight to Pittsburgh. Johnson is 5-4-2 with a 2.81 GAA and a .909 save %. Now a tough decison for coach Bruce Boudreau with who to start in net between Theodore and Brent. Both are good but Johnson has a better GAA and save % but both are playing great.
